PREDATOR: STRENGHTS/WEAKNESSES

As I said in my previous post I will be breaking down each the Predator and the Aliens in seperate posts, I will start with the Predator today.

I am not going to lie and say that my loyalty doesn't rest with one side of this arguement, and I personally have always been a much bigger fan of the Predator, and yes have had the Alien Vs. Predator arguement many of times with many of people.  Here I am going to break down the key strengths of the Predator, and key weaknesses of the Predator and I will also through in one intangible at the end that really sets them apart from the Aliens.

STRENGTHS:

The main strength that Predator has is technology.  They have an endless array of crazy out there weapons from shoulder cannons, heat vision, and of course that awesome way they can cloak themselves.  This definitely is a strength because they have the ability to attack from a distance, key in on the target they want, and just blast away, which helps so they can avoid getting sprayed with the always deadly acid blood.

Another strength is something I kind of thought of myself.  The strenght is a rigorous training regiment that they go throught.  These things are in amazing shape, never get tired, never seem to need food or water, and pain does not bother them, but motivates them.  I just feel that from the time they learn to walk they are put through a boot camp unlike any other.

I will put one more strength and then move on.  The next strength I look at is what appears to be just pure killer instinct.  They do not care about anything other than accomplishing their goal and will let nothing stop them.  The AVP movie totally ruined this when they allowed a human and Predator to work together, ugh I can never let that go, but their natural killer instinct is just amazing, and a definite strength in my eyes.

WEAKNESSES:

The list of weaknesses will not be very long.  Yes there are weaknesses, but I feel the strengths outweigh them.  I do think a weakness is actually one of the strengths that I mentioned, and that is the killer instinct.  This is a weakness to me as well because they let that instinct take too much control over them and they run into battles foolishly instead of taking a sure fire victory from a distance.

I also believe that they have a sense of cockiness in them.  It seems that they believe that they cannot be beaten.  They are always teasing and toying with their prey, allowing them to know that something is there stalking them, hunting them, wanting them dead.  This weakness leads to unnecessary confrontations with their prey.  If they weren't so arrogant in their skills they could play true hunter, let their prey come to them and easily take them out, but they tend to want to be face to face while facing their biggest foe.

INTANGIBLE:

Here I am going to put one final note, the intangible that makes a huge difference in the battle.  This is the fact that even in defeat the Predators will ultimately gain victory.  Most forget that they have a nuclear bomb attached to them and when they are in their most dire circumstances they initiate the countdown sequence, and well a nuclear bomb goes off, and everything dies.

That is all for now, I am going to work on the Alien writing soon, and should be up in the next couple of days.  Thanks for reading, and feel free to discuss.

Alien Vs. Predator: The Discussion

It seems like this is always a huge debate, who would win Aliens or the Predator.  The debates go back and forth for both sides, never really finding a true overall winner, and on it goes, never ending, but hey thats the joy of this debate.  In the next couple of days I will be going forward with this debate and will be arguing for both sides.  First I will go over the strengths and weaknesses of the Predator, followed by the same with the Aliens.  The point of this is not to find an actual winner, but to give my thoughts as to why each have a way to win, and to lose.  I hope that you will enjoy reading it, so please stay tuned.

IN DEFENSE OF: Richard Kelly's Southland Tales

It has become a trend these days for people to hit the internet blogs and forums to air their grievances over just about anything, especially movies.  It doesn't matter what the type of movie, year it was made, critical acclaim, or award winning, people will find something wrong with them.  I feel that this is mainly due to the human need for conflict, and smart humans like the type of conflict that won't end up requiring corrective rhinoplasty.

I am not one to argue ones opinion on anything, but I do have my own, and I do like to state it no matter who is listening (and it is usually a very limited audiences).  One movie in particular has gotten a very bad shake in my opinion.  That movie is Richard Kelly's Southland Tales.

This film gets bad reviews all over the web (IMDB 5.9 out of 10, and The Spoony Experiment ravaged it as one of the worst films of the decade) and in print (My Year of Flops stated that as gloriously rememberable Southland Tales was, it was still a fiasco.)

I do not understand all of the negative feedback.  What was to be expected from Kelly?  He proved he is good at making obscure hard to follow narratives when he released Donnie Darko five years earlier and it took another few years after that for Darko to get the credit it deserved.  The Main issue people seem to have with this film is that fact that it is confusing with a large amount of characters to follow.  I agree, it is rather confusing and hard to follow, but to me there in lies the genius.  This movie actually makes you pay attention from beginning to end, and to every thing going on in the foreground as well as background.  Most movies these days allow you to leave the room and still be able to come back and follow them, but not Southland Tales.  It is a thinking mans movie.

Another thing that gets thrown out as a fault is that it follows the story lines of a graphic novel, so in order to know the complete story it helps to read the books.  How is this a fault?  Didn't the Matrix Trilogy do the exact same thing?  Well no actually the Matrix Trilogy required you to watch an animated series, read comics, complete a video game, and find the lost arch in order to understand what was going on in that series, and the Matrix is loved for this.  It is a form of hypocrisy in my opinion.

The thing that I really enjoy about Southland Tales is that it is open for interpretation.  It doesn't tell you what is going on, and gives you the freedom to make up your own opinon.  I have my opinion on what is going on and I am by no means saying that I am right, but I feel as if the whole film we are watching is actually the script that Boxer Santeros has written.  Why do I feel this way?  Well he is supposed to be a huge hollywood action star, and he decided to write his own screen play, well maybe he doesn't know how to write a screen play and what came out was a mish mash of ridiculous interwoven plot points.  Again that is just one thing I thought of while watching the film.  Another thing I thought of was that maybe this, as well as all of Richard Kellys films, are inside jokes that only he and his friends understand but I digress.

The whole point I am trying to make is that while this movie has its flaws, as do all movies, it does not really deserve as much backlash as it has received and that is why I am defending it here for you all to read.  Until next time....have a great day.

Update Time

Hello out there in internet land.  I just wanted to come on here and give a quick update, so here it goes.  Yes I am slacking right now, times are busy and I do not want to post just to post, it is something I got in trouble with before because I was just posting to post which in turn drops quality to near zero.  I have a few things in the works, but being solo on this, and trying to spread the word takes time.  My main goal now is to build interest so I can actually interact with people, and not just talk to myself day in and day out since I tend to do that anyway.  In the very near future I am going to put up a review which I am planning and writing now, so keep your eyes peeled for that, and please feel free to contact me either through here, or via twitter @themovieroom and we can talk.  Thanks again for anybody reading this, and for your patience.

Past, Present, and Future

Just to give a brief introduction of what this is and what my plans are.  First off I once had a small blog where I reviewed movies, and I admit it was amateur at best.  With this new blog I intend on keeping the same format but actually put forth effort to make it enjoyable for people read.  That takes care of the Past and the Present of the headline I guess since I seemed to have merged them into one simple explanation.  As for the future I can say that if things work out as I have planned out in my head this blog will be fun for all.  My ultimate goal is to have multiple users posting their own videos, reviews, and whatever they feel the need to say.  The blog itself is about all things entertainment, so movies, games, books, and all things along those lines.  At this time I am going to do most of the posting myself, and hopefully get my Twitter page up and running where I can meet some qualified people to assist with this.  Updates will be frequent, but I also want the things that are posted to be something worth while.  There are too many sites, and blogs out there that just want to do nothing but complain, or curse, or scream about things.  Sure these things will inevitably make an appearance on here, but I do not want that to be the dominant focus.  Well there you have it, a little bit about the past, present, and future and I hope to build this little blog in to a great enjoyable thing for people to visit, and hopefully learn something.
